Research on India, Colonialism, Climate, and Global Development

My work has helped shape major debates in economic history, spanning state formation, empires, artisans, climate, and business. It has also advanced two powerful ideas in comparative development: first, that the economic consequences of European rule in Asia and Africa emerged not from imperial intentions alone but from the interaction of politics, geography, and markets; and second, that the history of tropical regions cannot be understood without recognising the decisive role of climate.
